Chuffed to get an image (however weird and disturbing) selected for the Press Photographers' Year.

The exhibition is showing at the Littleton Theatre at the National Theatre on London's South Bank, it's on till 19th September and is free to enter. There is also a book available to order here spanning two years of the competition.

Living under curfew - Dispersal Orders

Young Bengali men argue against being issued a Dispersal Order by PCSO's. The controversal order effectively means an enforced curfew for those deemed anti social between 6pm and 4am every day.

Dispersal orders give the police additional powers, under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 to disperse groups of two or more people where an officer has reasonable grounds for believing that their presence or behaviour has resulted, or is likely to result, in a member of the public from being harassed, intimidated, alarmed or distressed.

Once asked to disperse it will be a criminal offence for that person to return to the dispersal area for a 24-hour period and could lead to a £2,500 fine or imprisonment.

If a young person under the age of sixteen is stopped in the area after 9pm and is not accompanied by an adult the police can escort them to their home address, if they are either at risk or vulnerable from anti-social behaviour, crime or causing, or at risk of causing, anti-social behaviour. Photographers gather outside New Scotland Yard to celebrate the European Court of Human Rights decision to reject the governments appeal to its decision in January that ruled Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 in breach of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The campaign is not over yet, we want s44 repealed and there are rafts of other laws police are at liberty to harass us with.

But it is important to mark the victories when we win them!

Victory! Flash Mob

Last week the European Court of Human Rights rejected the governments appeal to its decision in January that ruled Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 in breach of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Although the Home Office has said it is still considering how the ruling affects the law and the police will continue to use it. It’s possible that any Stop & Search under s44 since 12th January 2010 will be open to legal challenge, so hang on to any receipts.

Unfortunately there are still a swathe of laws that police use to harass photographers, most notably s43, which is similar to s44 but requires an officer to suspect that you are a terrorist and s76 which makes it illegal to ‘elicit information about a police officer’ which includes photographing them.

In the meantime we’re going back to the place where our campaign started, outside New Scotland Yard. We’ll be gathering at 12 noon, tomorrow Sunday 4th July (Independence Day!) Come along and lets celebrate a little more freedom for photographers.

I Promise Not to Kill Myself

I was horrified but unfortunately not surprised to hear the news of another tragic death of a factory worker in China.

The 19 year old from Shenzhen is the 9th suspected suicide at Foxconn, a Taiwanese firm making computers and phones for companies like Apple and Sony.

In 2003 I was invited to China with two other British photographers, Sion Touhig and Mike Goldwater to document one of China's New Economic Development Zones.

Journalists were taken around the Provinces of South East China to witness the rapid industrialisation in the region as millions of workers were sucked into factories from small villages in the countryside.

Shenzhen, has grown from a small village into a city with a population over 10 million within 20 years.

Many factories we visited had no infrastructure at all, roads were still being built. They were the showcases, brand new, clean and bright, but even so it was clear working conditions were appalling. The image pictured shows Chinese women workers at the Chint Group a private firm and China's largest high voltage electrical appliance maker based in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province.

We were told the company only use women on this part of the production line because their hands were 'smaller and faster'. The work is long, repetitive, tedious and painful. Every element of the workers lives were regulated by the company from segregated dormitories to what seemed to be regulation length hair.

Wherever we visited our questions about unions were batted away by company management, why would such happy workers need trade unions? The recent increase in suicides and workers attempts to escape the monotony of virtually prison worker life is no surprise to me and I doubt the introduction of pledges for workers to sign stating that they will not kill themselves, will change the situation.

The global market race for cheaper products is made with the blood of these workers.

The Journey of Transition

I've been invited to speak at the University of Bedfordshire's first ever Refugee Week today.

I will be showing three sets of images at the event called the Journey of Transition.

Firstly the work I have done in France, called 'Permanent

Displacement - Calais refugees from Sangatte to destitution'

Secondly a set of images from the US/Mexico border called 'Border Angels

- the story of Mexican refugees and the vigilante Minute Men.'

and the third series of images will be a celebration of the colourful

and innovative campaigns from around the world from Indonesian

domestic maids in Hong Kong to the Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees.

Happy Easter?

According to the Church of England 30 churches are closed every year. I couldn't find the figure for the Catholic church but the number must be close to the number of pubs closing.

Maybe there is a correlation, perhaps Tesco is expanding their Faith range alongside the cheap booze?

Most likely the drop in church numbers is due to the return home of the Polish immigrant population and the horrific child sex abuse scandals that have hit the headlines this Easter.

International Women's Day

Monday 8 March is International Women's Day, it was one hundred years ago in 1910 that the idea was first suggested by German socialist Clara Zetkin. This year TUC are putting on a huge celebration, organised by the pioneers of mixing up ideas and entertainment, 'Philosophy Football'

Featuring comedy from Josie Long described by The Guardian as ' a figurehead for a new way of doing things in alternative comedy' . The night will open with the soulful vocals o Zena Edwards plus the hip-hop and spoken word duo Poetic Pilgrimage. Introduced by TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O'Grady with author Bonnie Greer, the show is compered by the brilliantly funny Lorraine Bowen. A visual display of international women's day will be provided by photographer Jess Hurd.

Capital of Culture?

I've just returned from a work trip to Istanbul. I was there two years ago with Mark Thomas working on his book exposing the crimes of Coca Cola.

Whilst I was there I visited Sulukule, the oldest gypsy community in the world and a community facing forced eviction and demolition, the story appeared as eyewitness in the Guardian newspaper.

The Roma residents, famous for their traditional gypsy music, were fighting the 'gentrification' of their historic community, which was only to leave a handful of houses as museum artifacts and re-house the gypsies in anonymous blocks some way outside the city.

The community is now dispersed, destroyed and impoverished and as Istanbul celebrates its European Capital of Culture status it represents exactly the opposite in my opinion.

The Usurp Art Gallery opens in a classic 1930's former butcher's shop with a group exhibition titled "Naissance" (birth of a movement or organization). Usurp has been inspired by the writings of Jean-Richard Bloch (1884–1947), playwright, political thinker, poet and anti-fascist. In his essay "Naissance d’une Culture" ("Birth of a Culture" 1936) he called for an art that would associate the democratic tradition with mass culture.

Contributing Artists include: Mona Hatoum, Disinformation, Chila Burman, Jess Hurd, Matt Jordan, Dulari Summaria, Alia Syed, Jeremy James Wood & Nazneen Ayyub-Wood, Sousan Luqman, Vista Mundi, Steve Beresford, The Pardhan Gond Collective, Usurp, Tokyo Rinpa Eshidan.
Performances by Dr Das, Emergency Bass Sound System, Najma Akhtar and Russell Martin.

Haiti Earthquake

This has been the most harrowing story I have ever covered.

The reason I went to Haiti was because I was so angry as a human being and a journalist that this level of avoidable devastation caused by an earthquake.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere but in terms of resources it used to be one of the richest. Colonialism, slavery, reparations, US intervention, loan repayments and corrupt and incompetent rulers have impoverished this country, this situation is man-made.

No Turning Back Christmas Party '09

Philosophy Football's 2009 Christmas Party is a seasonal night out of outrageous inspiration. We'll be mixing up ideas and entertainment for a fantastic event to start the festive break. Friday 18 December featuring a photographic review of the year from Jess Hurd. The lo-fi ukulele jazz of Tricity Vogue and one of the hits of the Edinburgh Festival Blow Up! The Credit Crunch Musical. With a German Oompah Band explaining the crisis of capitalism you just know you're in for a night out with a difference. The evening opens with an eighties vs noughties poetry slam, 1980s cult leftie alt poet Andy P vs new generation spoken word from Kate Tempest. Plus dancefloor fillers from Melstars: Music and in conversation John Harris, Helena Kennedy Jon Cruddas, Chuka Umunna and others. Presented in association with the campaigns and ideas group Compass. More Hostile Reconnaissance

Last year on UN Human Rights Day I was invited to cover a traveller wedding, one of four in four days at Dale Farm ahead of a planned site eviction by Basildon Council in Essex

As UN Human rights Day approaches this week Dale Farm is still intact and NUJ lawyers have today submitted a letter to the IPCC about the treatment I faced from policemen who stopped me under s44 of the Terrorism Act at the wedding, who took my camera and said I could have been doing "Hostile Reconnaissance"

I have been covering the lives and struggles of travellers in the UK since 1996 and more recently the problems for Roma gypsies across Europe. See the destruction of Sulukule, the oldest gypsy community in the world and the conditions in the camps around Rome

I'm a Photographer Not a Terrorist @ Signs of Revolt

10 years ago, in November 1999 an alliance of direct action activists, environmentalists and trade unionists shut down the meeting of the World Trade Organisation in Seattle, stopping the next trade round of Capitalist Globalisation. In the process they sparked a Movement of Movements right across the globe its slogan became ‘Another World is Possible’.

The exhibition celebrates a decade of creative resistance.

As part of the Festival of Radical Communication I will be chairing a session on Sunday 15th November 11am:

The panel includes photojournalist and investigative journalist Marc Vallée, film and print journalist Jason Parkinson and filmmaker Shaun Day.

“This panel looks at the impact of digital photographic tools on reporting events, particularly post-G20 and how the State is trying to criminalise image taking and the ways photographers are getting organised to resist this. This will be interspersed with photo shows and film clips from the archives of some of the key movements photographers and filmmakers.”

Criminalise Bankers Not Prostitutes

Sex Workers demonstrate against the Policing and Crime Bill and the Welfare Reform Bill. Parliament Square, London.

They demand:

- an end to the criminalisation of sex work

- safety and other rights for all workers in the sex industry, including the right to unionise

- the right to stay and not be deported

- the right not to have a criminal record so we can apply for other jobs

- decent wages and benefits for all so that we can refuse violence and exploitation in any industry

This is enlarged from an image I took in 2004 which shows a police officer with named photo ID's of individuals on a Stop the War coalition protest outside an election fundraising dinner where George Bush Senior was after dinner speaker (pic is used in the Guardian story related today)

Not only does it contain prominent peace activists but also outrageously, two journalists (names and faces have been blurred to protect the identity of individuals listed)

10 years ago, in November 1999 an alliance of direct action activists, environmentalists and trade unionists shut down the meeting of the World Trade Organisation in Seattle, stopping the next trade round of Capitalist Globalisation. In the process they sparked a Movement of Movements right across the globe its slogan became ‘Another World is Possible’.
This November exactly 10 years from that momentous demonstration, and with most of the predictions of the movements rapidly coming true what with the crisis of the economy, a permanent state of war and the collapse of our eco-system wrecking lives across the planet, the rich and powerful meet again in Copenhagen to discuss the next Climate treaty after Kyoto, yet again activists are preparing to challenge the idea that the Market can solve the problems of the world, and take another step toward that possible world after Capitalism.
Signs of Revolt is an exhibition that weaves together the story of the past decades social movements, drawing out the influences and connections between and across the movements against Capitalism, War and Climate Change. Using archive material and documentary photography and video from movement photographers and filmmakers. It reveals the story of how we got from Seattle to Copenhagen.
Interspersed in this narrative are works by artist and designer activists and collectives, produced during, within and for the movements, this is the first time such a collection has been brought together in the UK and it will be a chance to reflect upon and celebrate the new creative impulses that the movements spawned and the possibilties for developing the creative capacity of future movements, these issues will also be discussed in greater depth during a series of talks during the exhibition. As Capitalism threatens our very existence, Signs of Revolt defiantly maps out possible routes to a future filled with hope…

International Slavery Museum

The International Slavery Museum in Liverpool was opened in 2007 on Slavery Remembrance Day and on the bicentenary of the abolition of the British slave trade.

The Museum promotes the understanding of transatlantic slavery and its enduring impact. This was the first time I have managed to visit and I am very proud to have a couple of photographs of mine from Africa featured as part of the exhibition.

One of the images (seen here) is Nankabirwa Christine Mpagi from Kampala a widow looking after 28 grandchildren after all her own children died of Aids.

The other image is a Kenyan child walking through an open sewer in Kibera, the largest slum in Africa. See gallery images here
